Medicare is the federal health insurance program designed for senior citizens and people with disabilities. It offers affordable health care coverage for a variety of U.S. citizens and permanent residents. To qualify, you must meet a number of eligibility requirements.
Medicare Eligibility Requirements
To be accepted into the Medicare program, applicants must be age 65 or older or have been diagnosed with a qualifying disability or chronic condition. To qualify based on a disability, you must have been collecting Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for a minimum of 24 months. Though, if you have Lou Gehrig’s disease or suffer from End-Stage Renal Disease, you can circumvent this waiting period.
Premium-Free Part A Requirements
Some Medicare recipients are eligible for premium-free Part A benefits. This means they will not need to pay insurance premiums for their Part A coverage. To qualify for premium-free Part A, beneficiaries must have paid at least 10 years of Medicare taxes. Individuals who have not met this requirement will have their Part A premiums deducted from their total Social Security income if they are receiving it.

Choosing a Medicare Plan
Once you have confirmed that you are eligible for Medicare, the next step is to apply. Usually, people who meet the eligibility requirements will be accepted shortly thereafter. Afterwards, they need to choose a plan that meets their needs.
